SAGE Publishing releases encyclopedia in the expanding fields of surveillance and privacy
SAGE Publishing announces the publication of a new encyclopedia that explains how surveillance has become an essential component of the operations of global society and the impact it has on our security and privacy. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Surveillance, Security, and Privacy is the culmination of four years of systematic scholarship focused on the condition of shared humanity in the age of technologized information.
A three-volume set, the encyclopedia contains over 450 articles, authored and signed by prominent scholars from around the globe. Each article concludes with further readings and cross-references to help guide readers through a topic. In addition, the text contains a Reader’s Guide that organizes entries by broad thematic areas, which include, but are not limited to:
- Digital Cultures, Cybercommunities, and Simulated Selves
- Industries and Institutions of Surveillance and/or Security
- Security, Civil Liberties, and the Law
- Surveillance and Everyday Life
- Surveillance, Security, and Privacy Around the World
- Tools, Practices, and Decisions of Surveillance and Security Politics
- Trade in Surveillance, the Business of Security, and Strategies of Dissent
“The SAGE Encyclopedia of Surveillance, Security, and Privacy presents the evolving debates and dissects the emerging practices that populate the field’s cultural and global landscape,” comments General Editor Bruce A. Arrigo. “Admittedly, no single reference work of this sort can address all key controversies, cases, or questions; however, if systematically and strategically undertaken, it can make a decided contribution.”
Arrigo is a professor of public policy and criminology, law, and society at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has reviewed more than 200 journal articles, law reviews, book chapters, and academic essays and has served as the (co)author or (co)editor of 25 titles, published or in press.
