Analysis in Qualitative Research

October 2009 | 240 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Written for anyone beginning a research project, this introductory book takes you through the process of analysing your data from start to finish.

The author sets out an easy-to-use model for coding data in order to break it down into parts, and then to reassemble it to create a meaningful picture of the phenomenon under study. Full of useful advice, the book guides the reader through the last difficult integrating phase of qualitative analysis including diagramming, memoing, thinking aloud, and using one's feelings, and how to incorporate the use of software where appropriate.

Ideal for third year undergraduate students, master students, postgraduates and anybody beginning a research project, the book includes examples covering a wide range of subjects - making the book useful for students across the social science disciplines.

Hennie Boeije is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Methodology and Statistics of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Utrecht University, The Netherlands.

This is a user friendly text that I think will be very useful for students. Analysis is often the difficult point within the research process, when coming from a quantitative background

I find the book very useful for qualitytive part of mixed methods course as it has a lot of practical examples.

This is probably the best and most readable and engaging book I have read in a long time on analysis of qualitative research.

The scope and depth covered is suitable for undergraduate and those new to this area as a foundation text. The language is fluid and accessible with consistent reference to supportive evidence. Peppered with 'tips', a breadth of examples and advise this text is an excellent resource for a wide range of disciplines.

The text boxes with relevant studies are a very helpful feature of this book and the recurring use of the football hooliganism example will enable students to see how the different elements of a qualitative project fit together. Other valuable features include starting the book with the distinction between quantitative and qualitative research (and giving examples), the examples of topic guides and a methods section and the box on the use of quotes. The use of tips and frequently asked questions are less helpful features and might have been better put to the end of chapters. In other areas more examples would have been useful, particularly in chapter 5, where an illustration (even in very broad terms) of a study where data had been segmented and reassembled would have been very helpful to the reader. Chapter 9 could have made reference to reflexivity.

I am on sabbatical this coming
year and will consider this book in my qualitative course the following year. Thanks for sending this copy along.

I showed the book to some of the students in my current qualitative methods course and they opted to purchase the book on their own.

excellent text and will be adopted by those using qualiative research

As there already are so many textbooks on qualitative research, I expected this to be about analysis, and nothing else.
The book is easy to follow, but I would recommend it at beginner-level, not for advanced students.

The book may be too academical for our students. We would like a book with specific assignments for students to practice with.

Agnes Mijnhout

A very helpful book for my PhD students. Data analysis is always a nightmare for research students. This book will assist in qualitative data analysis.
