Effective Communication for Nursing Practice

April 2024 | 216 pages | Learning Matters

Effective communication is at the heart of the nursing role. From providing person-centred care to collaborating with the multi-disciplinary team, this book will develop your communication and interpersonal skills and support you in finding your own voice. It equips you with key theory and principles and shows how to apply them to practice, from communicating with compassion to overcoming barriers to communication. This is your go to guide for effective communication in your everyday practice.

Key features:

·         Each chapter is mapped to the 2018 NMC Standards

·         Takes a lifespan approach, covering communication with different groups across all fields of practice

·         Content and examples explore communication in relation to diversity, equity and inclusion, encouraging culturally competent and emotionally intelligent practice

·         Filled with activities and case studies to support critical thinking, reflection and application of theory to everyday nursing practice

Chapter 1: Understanding and applying communication and interpersonal skills

Chapter 2: Communication and power relationships

Chapter 3: Communication in different settings

Chapter 4: Communication in the context of ‘race’ and cultural competence

Chapter 5: Communication and the multidisciplinary team

Chapter 6: Communication with chlldren and young people

Chapter 7: Communication with adults

Chapter 8: Communication with older people

Chapter 9: Mental health, wellbeing and talking therapies: the benefits of effective communication

Chapter 10: Communication with people who live with learning disabilities

Chapter 11: Death, dying and bereavement: communication perspectives

Chapter 12: Communication with compassion

Very useful manual. However, there were some chapters that I would be interested - for example communication with older adults; difficult conversations, etc.
