Reflective Interviewing
A Guide to Theory and Practice
- Kathryn Roulston - University of Georgia, USA
In order to undertake quality research using qualitative interviews, a researcher must be able to theorize the application of interviews to investigate research problems in social science research. As part of this process, researchers examine their subject positions in relation to participants, and examine their interview interactions systematically to inform research design. This book provides a practical approach to interviewing, helping researchers to learn about themselves as interviewers in ways that will inform the design, conduct, analysis and representation of interview data.
The author takes the reader through the practicalities of designing and conducting an interview study, and relates various forms of interview to different underlying epistemological assumptions about how knowledge is produced. The book concludes with practical advice and perspectives from experienced researchers who use interviews as a method of data generation.
This book is written for a multidisciplinary audience of students of qualitative research methods.
Good textbook. Well-structured, good examples and stimulates new PhD-students to reflect on their own research.
Doctorate students in health and social care are mainly concerned, although not exclusively, with qualitative methods. These often involve interviewing, requiring advanced skills of reflective practice. This book is an essential text for those wishing to improve their skills and to make a difference to practice
More than the basics required for the course
This book will be very valuable to those students who are choosing to use qualitative interviewing methods for their masters dissertation. It provides an in-depth consideration of both the theory and practicalities of conducting research interviews, and as such, will be really useful for postgraduate students in counselling and the social sciences.
This is a very easy to read book that I will also be recomending to research students.
A text that is useful background reading and for student preparing for their research. Many student adopt a qualitative approach and use interviewing as a method of gathering data.
Excellent for students writing proposals and doing research projects
This is a very clearly presented text in which the author effectively integrates examples to illustrate theory and provides useful activities to support practical application. The further reading sections are also very useful. This will be an invaluable text to support novice researchers starting out on their research journey.
This book explains qualitative research and it's analysis in a very pragmatic fashion which means that it will be useful to both undergraduate and neewly started post graduate students. I have ordered copies for the library
