Chronicling crises in the world’s economies: The SAGE Encyclopedia of World Poverty, Second Edition

September 22, 2015

Los Angeles, CA- Addressing the changing world of poverty in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, SAGE today announces the second edition of The SAGE Encyclopedia of World Poverty, with 175 new articles and 775 updated original articles on poverty and its related issues. A five part set, this updated resource has expanded by two volumes, covering new categories relating poverty to health, education, environmental sustainability, technology, and more.

The Encyclopedia of World Poverty, Second Edition is an authoritative and thoroughly investigated source on poverty,” commented Dr. Mehmet Odekon, editor of the second edition and award-winning first edition. “It is an important reference source for students, scholars, and anyone ready to engage in the complicated but critical issues related to poverty.”

Available in both print and digital formats, the second edition includes one full volume of data and primary documents as of 2014, from sources such as the Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook Country Comparisons and the World Bank Open Data.

Updated economic data on U.S. states and individual countries are included in the encyclopedia’s 900+ articles, written and signed by more than 100 original and new contributors across the globe. The articles are supplemented with an updated Chronology of World Poverty and a Resource Guide that bookend this comprehensive set.

Editor Mehmet Odekon is Professor of Economics and Tisch Family Distinguished Professor at Skidmore College in New York. Dr. Odekon has edited numerous encyclopedias focused on economics, including the first edition of the SAGE Encyclopedia of World Poverty (2006), named on Library Journal’s Best Reference List and Booklist Editor’s Choice. His research interests pertain to the political economy of development and globalization and domestic and international poverty and income equality.
